Sirigu Art from Ghana In Nothern Ghana, there is a longstanding tradition of painting the houses  by women. This tradition was about to vanish. In 1997 Melanie Kasise founded the Sirigu Women Organisation for Pottery and Art (SWOPA). The objective is to improve the position of women in Sirigu and to maintain the unique way of painting their houses. The traditional way of decorating houses has developped into a contemporary art form, from wall painting to painting on canvas. The women of Sirigu give an invaluable picture. Colours, shapes and symbols tell a story about how to survive in a dry savanna area in Northern Ghana. A story about the relationship between human beings, animals, soil and the traditions and values of life. Their paintings are based on stories passed from generation to generation and which have been told by the mothers to their children and by sages and other storytellers. ‘Fertility’, Eria Nsugabe, Uganda, 2009 ‘Lost from burden’, Paulo Akkiki, Uganda,2005 ‘Facing the beast’, Chiko, Zimbabwe,2001 ‘Korhaen’Coxae, Botswana,2006 Tamai Foundation
